Meet Roger

Inspired by one very loved dog.

Roger is a nine-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer. He is the kind of dog who plays fetch like it’s his job — the ball leaves your hand and he is already gone, already working, already sure this is the most important assignment of the day.
Last year that job met a lump.

A mass formed on the back of his neck and grew to the size of a golf ball. The diagnosis was a mast cell tumor, one of the most common skin tumors in dogs. What followed was the part every owner dreads and then does anyway: tests to make sure it hadn’t spread, more appointments, surgery consults, and a lot of standing in kitchens at night wondering what else you can actually do.

So I read. Veterinary papers. Ingredient studies. Kitchen chemistry. Then I started mixing four things into his meals.

Turmeric went in first. Its standout compound, curcumin, has been studied for antioxidant activity and for pathways involved in a normal inflammatory response. In the lab, turmeric extract has even been tested on canine mastocytoma cell lines — the same family of cells as Roger’s tumor — where it was associated with slower cell growth and more programmed cell death. That is a dish in a laboratory, not a promise in a living dog. It was still the paper I needed to see before I put it in his food.

Black pepper went in next, on purpose and in a small amount. Curcumin is famously hard for the body to use; the gut and liver break most of it down before it can do much of anything. Piperine, the compound in black pepper, has been shown in a well-known 1998 study to raise curcumin’s bioavailability dramatically — up to twenty-fold in people when the two are given together. Pepper was never flavor. Pepper was the lockpick.

Powdered beef bone broth was the thing that made him finish the bowl. It brought collagen, gelatin, and amino acids like glycine and proline — the building blocks researchers study for joint comfort, connective tissue, and a well-supported gut lining. A 2024 trial of collagen peptides in dogs with osteoarthritis found better gait and better owner-reported quality of life.

Turkey tail mushroom was the fourth. It is one of the few mushrooms with a published clinical trial in dogs with cancer. Its polysaccharides, PSP and PSK, have been studied for immune support; a small University of Pennsylvania pilot in dogs with hemangiosarcoma reported longer median survival at the highest dose than many historical surgery-only averages.

Every morning and every night, those four went over his food. For two months, while we drove to appointments and sat through consultations, that was the ritual.

By the time he went in for surgery, the lump that had been a golf ball was a pea. So small the surgeon had to hunt for it.

The surgery was a success. Roger came home. He kept eating the same topper. He is still eating it. Fetch is still his job. He is older now, and somehow more himself — brighter in the eyes, quicker to the ball, the engine running the way it is supposed to run.

Rogertopper exists because I wanted that bowl to be easy for the next person standing in the kitchen at night.
